Hawaii's First Organic Products Directory : The Hawaii Organic Farmers Association (HOFA) has released Hawaii’s first Organic Products Directory, developed in collaboration with the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture and the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation. The directory contains a listing of Hawaii’s certified organic producers including crops, honey, livestock, and value-added processed products. The Hawaii Organic Products Directory offers information on how to participate as an apprentice on a local farm; a glossary of common terms; island by island farmer’s markets; organic seed sources; agriculture supply stores; Hawaii’s natural food and grocery retail stores, and useful contacts and websites. Hawaii’s Organic Products Directory is intended to serve the greater organic community and connect all supporting members from farm to table. Our aim is to help expand the local organic economy for the benefit of all Hawaii’s people. The directory can either be purchased directly from the HOFA website for $6.00, to cover shipping and handling. Credit card payment for the directory can be made by calling the HOFA office: (808) 969-7789. You can also download the directory for viewing by clicking on the link in the column to the left. It may take some time to download, please be patient. The Hawaii Organic Farmers Association is the only accredited agency based in Hawaii that has been approved by the USDA to provide certification services for organic farmers, ranchers and processors of organic products that comply with National Organic Program (NOP) standards. HOFA is a non-profit organization initiated by farmers to promote and expand a strong organic agriculture sector in Hawaii. For more information about the Hawaii Organic Farmers Association or the Directory, contact the Hilo office at (808) 969-7789, email hofa@hawaiiorganicfarmers.org, or visit the website at www.hawaiiorganicfarmers.org Federal Organic Standards information on the USDA National Organic Program For all current EVENTS click here
RURAL CONNECTIONS Newsletter, latest edition on line Hawaii Organic Farmers Association
From CTAHR extension agent Ed Mersino's newsletter: "How to Go Organic" The Organic Trade Association (OTA) recently launched howtogoorganic.com a website for farmers and processors seeking to transition to organic agriculture. The website is designed as a clearinghouse of North American resources for farmers and businesses interested in becoming organic or in creating new organic enterprises. In the USA, consumer demand for organics exceeds the rate of organic production. The new website will encourage further domestic production by assembling in a single on-line resource the full range of available information for farmers and producers transitioning to organic.
